Spring is here! Hearts open up. People willing to change something in their lives should do that in spring, reccommend experts. Everything boosts new energy. Spring symbolises a beginning and hope. This is why every year March 21st people all over Italy meet to commemorate innocent victims of criminal mafia organisations, this year for the 18th time. This tradition has been initiated by Libera – Associations, names and numbers against the mafias (Libera – Associazioni, nomi e numeri contro le mafie), the anti-mafia movement found by Luigi Ciotti.
We meet in Intra, at the ferry terminal, Piazza Flaim.
Our manifestation starts as a quiet march, mostly, interrupted regularly by chanting of names. Whole families wander through Intra and Pallanza. Many young people have joined, as have many elderly. Many carry the flag of Libera.
Our march ends in Piazza Ranzoni, right in front of the administration of the province whose capital Verbania is since 1992. A guitar player is waiting on stage. Now the calling out of more than 800 names of innocent mafia victims begins. More than 40 people participate in the calling out of victim names. It is a ritual. Maybe rituals are necessary to dissolve a culture of rejection of state authorities.
